Firefighters awarded for their bravery on Black Saturday

MORE than 4470 fire fighters will be awarded a medal recognising their efforts during the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

The National Emergency Medal honours people who served their community during emergencies.

Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells says the CFA members deserve recognition for their efforts.

“I want to commend the award recipients from across Victoria for the courage and commitment they showed to protect others during a long and difficult campaign,” Mr Wells said.

“These CFA members worked bravely to protect communities during the worst bushfires in Australian history and are well deserving of this recognition.”

Mr Wells says it’s time to modernise and streamline the emergency management structures to provide the best response for future emergencies.

The fires of 2009 took 173 Victorian lives and destroyed thousands of homes.

Earlier this year, 224 Victorian SES members were presented with the National Emergency Medals in recognition of their service during the 2009 Victorian bushfires.

Medals have also been awarded to volunteers involved in Cyclone Yasi and the Queensland floods.
